July 12

Friday July 12

Dear Pat (I feel we are getting to know each other, though I still look forward to our meeting),

Good Friday morning to you! I have read many things on the news lately that let me know you have had a very productive week. You were able to get the lawmakers to make the anti-choice legislation acceptable to you by linking it to safety! Never mind that it was motorcycle safety - I mean safety is safety, right? I'm sure you know best about this, of course.

Now, as I have stated before, I am not personally affected by your anti-choice legislation, nor really by your motorcycle legislation, but I do have a question. I understand that if you sign this bill there will just be one abortion clinic left in North Carolina. As you know, you are the governor of a pretty large state, and I understand that the one clinic left will be one in Asheville. That is way on the western side of the state - almost to Tennessee! But then the link to motorcycles makes more sense - will women who need an abortion be issued a motorcycle so that they can get to Asheville safely? Will they need to find a man to drive the motorcycle for them? It is nice that you have taken away the choice for women in this way - they know the one place they can go for an abortion and they now know the approved way to get there! What a forward-thinking legislature!

Now, my personal choices today are laid before me and I hope you can get back to me soon, now that we have women's health taken care of. I need to clean my kitchen and finish my laundry. What should I do first? And should I have the TV or radio on while I do this work? If my clothes are too wrinkled should I iron them or just put them back in the dryer for a few minutes with a wet cloth?

I'm also worried about my evening plans. The people at my church have given me the responsibility of being on the church council. We have a meeting tonight and all day tomorrow to prepare for the coming year. What worries me is that our church council president is a woman. How will she be able to lead us as we make choices? In fact, how will many of us on council make the choices we need to make, since there are several women in the group? Come to think of it, one of our ministers is a woman as well! Now that we understand that we are incapable of making choices without male guidance, though, I'm sure we'll all defer to the men without question.

By the way, I saw my parents yesterday. You used to be their mayor. My dad must really miss you because he said that he wishes that you weren't living in Raleigh now and that you would hopefully come back to Charlotte soon. He said that you really couldn't mess up Charlotte that much since the mayor doesn't have that much power there, and is worried that you are in over your head.

Have you seen this? North Carolina is still in the news!

July 12

Dear Governor McCrory,

Well, it seems to be another rainy day here in the Piedmont. I have been reading that a lot of farmers are worried about the rain. It seems that too much rain is as bad as not enough. Who knew? Certainly not me, I am just a woman and not even a woman farmer. I am wondering; do you think all of this rain is God's judgment on North Carolina for turning our backs on the poor and unemployed?

Of course that is not MY opinion. I mean, the poor could just pull themselves up by their bootstraps right? If they really wanted to. And what's with all these people saying they can't find jobs? I don't get it. Here in Thomasville I'm sure there are some jobs, well, maybe not so many, but if people really looked....

Well, I need to go. I'm lunching with a friend today. My husband is out of town so I couldn't get his permission but my friend's husband said it was ok. I feel good knowing that we have a man in charge of our lunch.

Have a great day!
Debbie Leonard
